    Exercise Balls at Work

Lately I’ve been bringing some of my workout into the office.  Figured it’s a good way to keep my core tight and engaged, and maybe burn some extra calories — the same ones I pick up grazing on office snacks.

    wah wah

I got on the scale today for the first time in over two weeks (pre-vacay).

    bad news : I gained 1 pound

good news: Despite little to no exercise and eating not-so-great, I only gained 1 pound

minor set-back, but I’ll live through it.  The important thing is that I weighed myself.  As my trainer Delon says, everyone needs a break.  I had mine.  I’m back.  I’m committed.

    Mark.

    My.

Next goal: 5 pounds by September 1st.

Time To Hit The Reset Button

To my adoring fans (and I know there are oh, so many of you) :  I’m still here!  I just went on a little vacation.  First San Francisco (for work and play) and then Cape Cod for a little downtime.

    Here’s what I learned:

    • Routine is super hard on the road.  In fact, almost impossible.  Especially when you don’t plan ahead and hope to make time for the things that are important to you, like working out.
    • Don’t let yourself get too hungry.  Plan for and pack snacks.  Not eating for too long means overeating later.
    • Build your schedule around workouts.  If you are traveling for work, schedule times in your day that you can work out — and factor in showering and get-ready time.  If you’re traveling for fun, make it a point to be active.  Walk around the city, hike a mountain, go for a run in an unfamiliar town.
    • Plan most meals.  Read menus before committing.  And remember, the first bite tastes the same as the tenth.

Obviously these are learned lessons for a reason. But I’m back in action and routine is awesome, and I don’t regret eating this:

on sourdough bread.  on the beach.  with mozzarella sticks on top. that’s right.  Don’t Be Jealous.  Time to hit the reset button

    I’ve Lost 50 Pounds!!!

    Fact.

That’s like a small child.  Or animal.  Or a group of small animals.

In fact, that’s exactly 6.25 times the weight of my cat, Lola.

    That’s like losing 6 Lolas

Dang, that’s a lot of weight.

But seriously, Don’t Be Jealous …let’s not get over-excited here.  Still a long ways til final goal…but good progress.  And a lot different from the first time I dropped this, posted it, and gained the weight back.

Next play.   Gotta get my ass on a treadmill and keep making the magic happen!

    The Importance of Weight Training

As I’ve said here before, I work out with a trainer pretty regularly.  And although we vary our workouts to include cardio exercise and boxing, a lot of the work we do is straight up weight lifting & strength training.

I mention this because I know a lot of women that spend a tremendous amount of time focusing on cardio exercise; running, elliptical, aerobic classes, etc.  Calories in, calories out, right? Those activities are all wonderful and a necessary part of health, fitness and weightloss.  However, strength training is just as integral.

Here’s why: The more muscle mass you have, the more calories you burn!  When you lift weights, you build lean muscle tissue which is more metabolically active than fat. When you increase your muscle, you also increase metabolism which means you’re burning more calories throughout the day. Regular strength training is just as important as cardio exercise for losing fat and getting fit.

Also, lifting weights helps build muscular endurance and strength; Additional muscle mass increases your ability to store glycogen, a carbohydrate. With more glycogen available to your muscles, you will be able to train longer with less fatigue.
